In a sudden development, TRS president and CM of Telangana K Chandrasekhar Rao called for a meeting of the party’s state executive committee on February 7, triggering wide speculations.

The meeting will be held at 2 pm at Telangana Bhavan under the leadership of KCR. He invited all the party leaders, including state committee members, ministers, MPs, MLAs and MLCs, state-level corporation chairpersons, zilla parishad chairpersons, mayors, municipal chairpersons, DCCB chairpersons and DCMS presidents, to the meeting.

According to a media release from the party, the meeting will discuss issues like membership renewal, appointment of party committees from village-level to the state-level and election of party president etc.

The arrangements for the conduct of party’s annual plenary on April 27, besides other institutional issues of the party will also be discussed at length at the state executive committee meeting, the party statement said.

While it is not uncommon for the TRS chief to convene the party’s executive committee meeting, the timing of the meeting itself is creating some doubts. Normally, such executive committee meetings will be held during the party’s annual conclave.

The TRS annual plenary is generally held in the last week of April and there is no need to discuss the arrangements for the same so early in February itself. The membership drive and appointment of party committees will also be generally done only at the time of annual conclave.

So, why did KCR call for a meeting of state executive now? The statement released by the party has given certain hints: like election of party president and discussion on some internal institutional issues of the party.

This led to the speculation that KCR might announce stepping down from the CM post or even as the TRS chief at the state executive committee meeting. This has lent credence to the speculations that KCR may anoint his son K T Rama Rao as the chief minister around February 8.
